Team Ireland HQ is buzzing this afternoon following Fiona Doyle’s stunning swim this afternoon that secured her a bronze medal in the 100m Breaststroke and a new national record.
Placed 6th at the turn Doyle picked it up in the second 50 metres and finished 0.5 seconds ahead of the fourth placed finisher. The bronze medal is Doyle’s second World University Games medal following up on her silver in the same event at the 2013 Kazan Games. Coincidentally the silver medal was also won in a national record time; a record which stood until this afternoon.
In brief, on what was another extremely busy day for Team Ireland students:
The day began with NUIG’s Darren Wallace comfortably winning his round of 48 in the Archery competition only to disappointingly loose out to his French opponent in the round of 24. Darren scored an 82 in the round of 48 and if he had managed to record the same score in the round of 24 would have been well in contention. Unfortunately it was not to be Darren was eliminated with his opponent progressing into round of 16
After getting a bye into the second round Queen’s Eoin Fleming was frustrated by his Dominican Republic’s opponent in the quarter final of the Judo competition. The Dominican Republican scored one point early in the fight and from then until the end frustrated all of Fleming’s attempts to draw safemdonline.com level. It was a cruel blow for the young Belfast man whose competition was literally over within 5 minutes.
The swim team’s good week continued with both Sycerika McMahon (Texan A & M) and Nicholas Quinn (Edinburgh) progressing to the semi-finals of the 200m IM and the 200m Breaststroke; unfortunately neither swimmer progressed from their semi-final. In the morning session Shani Stallard (UCD), Dan Sweeney (Loughborough) and Jordan Sloan (UU) swam in the heats of the 200m IM, 200m Breaststroke and 50m backstroke but failed to progress.
The Women’s Football completed the group stage of their competition with a 3-0 defeat to South Korea. The Irish girls contained a well-drilled and conditioned Korean side, who were missing many of their key players, until the introduction of the Korean number 10 Jang who within 8 minutes had scored two goals and narrowly missed a third. The Irish girls now face the USA on Wednesday at 3am Irish time.
Tuesday, Day 4, sees Team Ireland the swim and men’s football teams competing:
– In the morning swim session Grainne Murphy and Sycerika McMahon compete in the 400m Freestyle heats
– Fiona Doyle is back in the pool again in the heats of the 200m Breaststroke
– Jordan Sloan swims in the 100m Freestyle heats
– Shauna O’Brien swims in the 100m Butterfly heats
– The men’s football team face Russia at 8.30am Irish time in a crucial final Group D game.
