Volleyball Cup Finals Weekend Success

University of Galway (Men) and Trinity College Dublin (Women) collected the top honours as the Student Sport Ireland / Volleyball Ireland Cup finals took place in University of Limerick recently.

For the first time the 3rd level cup finals took place alongside the Volleyball Ireland Cup Finals weekend, and the action got underway on Friday evening with both Tier 2 Cup finals down for decision.

Munster Technological University Cork were crowned SSI/VI Men’s Tier 2 Cup winners with a 3-0 success over Griffith College Dublin. Maynooth University collected the second title of the weekend as they defeated University College Dublin 3-0 in the SSI/VI Women’s Tier 2 Cup.

On Sunday it was the time for both Tier 1 Cup Finals. The men once again got the afternoon underway and University of Galway put in a powerful performance to see off Technological University Dublin by three sets to zero, TU Dublin did fight for every point during the contest with some remarkable rallies and retrieving by the runners up.

Trinity College Dublin and Dublin City University renewed their rivalry on the court in the Women’s Tier 1 Cup Final. Trinity College Dublin were crowned winners for the third year in a row in the Tier 1 Cup with a fantastic victory over their opponents. Both opening sets were won 25-18, before the third set victory was a real battle all the way to the end before Trinity just got over the finish line.

Student Sport Ireland are delighted to have partnered with Volleyball Ireland for finals weekend in University of Limerick and look forward to continuing to develop third level volleyball in the coming seasons, with four competitions now in the calendar for students, with League, Intervarsity, Cup and Beach Volleyball Intervarsity.
