University of Galway collected the Student Sport Ireland/Volleyball Ireland Women’s league title on Tuesday 22 November as they overcame 2021-22 champions Trinity College Dublin in a fantastic final in Maynooth University.
Four teams from across the country travelled to Maynooth University for Women’s finals day with the action getting underway as University of Galway met South East Technological University Carlow in the opening semi-final. This proved to be a very exciting game with the girls in maroon progressing after a great fight on a 25-19, 25-22 scoreline.
The second semi-final was a Dublin derby as Dublin City University took on the defending champions Trinity College Dublin. In another close contest, the Trinity girls advanced with a 25-18, 25-14 win.
The two best sides from the 16 that started this years SSI/Volleyball Ireland League were now pitted against each other in the final. The opening set saw everything from brilliant serves to incredible diving retrievals from the floor and some fantastic power at the net, with University of Galway getting over the line 25-21. The momentum was fully behind the maroon clad side now and they powered to victory in the second set 25-14.
Both sides will be among the teams who will compete in the SSI/Volleyball Ireland Cup competition which will take place in Semester 2.
