Sean Purcell races to individual title as TU Dublin claim Team Championship

The chequered flag came down on the 2021-22 Student Sport Ireland league yesterday in Whiteriver Karting centre in Collon, Co. Louth, as Technological University Dublin took the team championship title and the individual championship title went to Sean Purcell from Dublin City University.

The competition, which was run over three round, Round 1 in Whiteriver on the national circuit in November, Round 2 in Kartworld in Watergrasshill last Thursday, with a return to Whiteriver to race on their superb international track on Thursday February 24th.

The team championship was very competitive from round 1 right through to the end with 15 teams taking part including new entrants TUS Midwest and Dundalk IT. It was the former who lead the championship after taking 68 points in round 1, however after round two in Kartworld it was TU Dublin who took over the lead in the championship with a 63 point return.
Going into the final round the top three teams were TU Dublin ‘A’ on 126, Dundalk IT ‘A’ on 97 and DCU ‘A’ a further point back on 96. TU Dublin secured the team championship title with a 65 point return in Whiteriver for a total of 191 points, Dundalk IT ‘A’ finished second on 154 points and third place was secured by DCU ‘A’ on 137.

The individual championship was also a closely fought battle. Sean Purcell (Dublin City University) would lead from the green flag in round one in Whiteriver all the way to the chequered flag in round 3 as he claimed 1st in Round 1, 2nd place in round 2 and 2nd place in round 3 which saw him finish on 70 points. Second place went to Harry McGovern from TU Dublin on 59 points, while third spot overall went to Lorcan Bellew (Dundalk IT) on 51 points.
