NUI Galway take SSI Women’s Volleyball Title Across the Shannon

2019 Student Sport Ireland Women’s Volleyball Champions NUI Galway

The Student Sport Ireland Women’s Volleyball title headed west on Wednesday March 13th as NUI Galway took the honours on finals day in Maynooth University.

The format for the day saw semi-finals in the morning and the final in the afternoon. NUI Galway had to come through a bruising semi-final against TU Dublin City Campus to reach the final. After losing the opening set 25-19 to the Dublin side, the girls from Galway stepped up to the mark with a brilliant 25-23 victory in the second set and with the power now in their hands they saw out the tie breaker on a 15-10 score line.

The second semi-final pitted Cork Institute of Technology against Maynooth University. The home side proved to be too strong for the Cork side and secured their final berth with a 25-10, 25-16 victory.

Two evenly matched teams took to the court in the final and it was NUI Galway who took the game to their opponents and raced into and early lead and eventually won the set 25-20. Powerful serving and some fantastic rallies were delivered by both sides before NUI Galway sealed success with a 25-19 win in the second set to take the title.
