On Friday February 23rd, Munster Technological University Cork were crowned winners of the Student Sport Ireland Mixed Hockey League 2023-24 after a dramatic day’s play on the Sport Ireland Campus.
The eventual winners secured their final spot in the morning semi-final, when they eventually got the better of Ulster University Coleraine. The match had finished 2-2, so the final berth was decided on penalties with the Cork side winning 4-3 in shuttles.
University of Galway were the opposition in the final and the decider had all the thrills and excitement with both sides pressing the attack switch right from the start. Scores flowed freely and more goals could have been scored except for the excellent goalkeeping on display at either end. Eventually MTU Cork came from 3-2 down in the second half to win 4-3 and add their name to the cup for the first time ever, in the competition’s 3rd year.
A huge congratulations to MTU Cork, and a special thank you to all students, coaches and umpires who were involved in this year’s league!
