Team Ireland Archers have been in action in the individual competitions over the past three days in Napoli at the World University Games. With varying levels of international experience among the team it was a step into the unknown for Niamh Merry (Dublin City University), Roisin Mooney (NUI Galway) and Daniel Foley (TU Dublin).

In the individual compound event Niamh Merry came through the ranking round seeded 32nd and in the opening round she defeated Israeli competitor Bahareh Rezaei 140-135, to set up a chance to take on the number one seed Yesmin Bostan from Turkey. On this occasion Niamh found the accuracy of Bostan too hot to handle and Turskish archer progressed on a final score line of 142-134.

In the men’s individual compound event Daniel Foley was seeded 42nd after the qualification round but put in a sterling performance to see off 23rd seed Yann Damour from France in the round of 64, as the TU Dublin student scored a 141-138 victory. Unfortunately, Daniel was squeezed out by two points in the round of 32 by Indian archer Rajat Chauhan, with a final score of 144-142.

Roisin Mooney came through the qualification round in 45th overall, setting up a contest against Belinda Maxworthy from Australia. The Australian had her eye on the target from the outset of this encounter and progressed to the next round.

Niamh Merry and Daniel Foley competed in the Mixed Compound Event on Thursday afternoon but lost out after a very close battle against local heroes Alex Boggiatto and Eleonora Grilli in the opening round.
