At the World University Games today Day 4, (Tuesday 7th) the Men’s Football Team beat Russia 2-1 to top group D with seven points from nine and progress to the Quarter Finals.
The Irish lads survived long spells of sustained Russian pressure before Jake Corrigan (MU) got on the end of Conor McDonald’s (DKIT) cross deep into first half injury time to put Danny Crowley’s men one up at half time.
The Russian side piled on the pressure again after the half -time break but Ireland held out and then for a second time caught the Russians on the break with Conor McDonald (again) doing great work down the left before crossing for Alan O’Sullivan (DCU) who leaped brilliantly to head Ireland into a two goal advantage. The Russians did pull one goal back via the penalty spot on eighty minutes but the Irish lads held out to secure a famous win. They now progress to the quarter finals where they will meet Italy on Thursday morning (8.30am Irish time).
Four swimmers, Fiona Doyle (200m Breaststroke), Jordan Sloan (100m freestyle), Shauna O’Brien (100m Butterfly) and Sycerika McMahon (400m freestyle) competed in the morning pool session but unfortunately none progressed to the semi-final stage.
