Kate Frost (TU Dublin Tallaght Campus) was crowned Student Sport Ireland / Badminton Ireland Women’s Open Singles Champion on Thursday February 20th as she proved herself to be the best badminton player in 3rd level in Ireland with some fantastic performances at the competition in Waterford IT Arena.
The format saw twelve players divided into four groups of three players in a round robin system. Kate Frost took top spot in Group B with comfortable wins over Tara Bradley (Waterford IT) and Shweta (National College of Ireland) to set up a semi-final against Group D winner Jennifer Murphy (NUI Galway). Frost advanced to the final after a 21-8, 21-9 victory over Murphy.
Molly Davies (NUI Galway) and Ellie Power (TU Dublin City Campus) topped Groups A and C respectively and met in the other semi-final a game which was won by Davies on a 21-9, 21-10 score.
Kate Frost took the honours in the final with a 21-7, 21-8 victory over the hard-working Molly Davies.
The format saw every player play at least four games and ranking finals took place along the line with Jennifer Murphy (NUIG) winning the 3rd/4th place final with a 20-22, 21-18, 21-12 win over Ellie Power (TUDCC).
The shield winner and finishing in 5th place overall was Ciara Worrell from IT Carlow after she defeated Anna Ando from National College of Ireland 21-8, 21-12 in the shield final.
