Irish Student Athletes in Action This Weekend at the World University Games.

With the full delegation now on site, here’s what today had in store and what’s on over the weekend.

Fri, August 18th: Today both the women’s and men’s football teams came away with hard earned draws to begin their campaigns. The Women face tough conditions with a mid-afternoon kick off against Mexico, while the Men played against a familiar opponent France.

Sat, August 19th: The opening ceremony takes place at 12 noon GMT.

Sun, August 20th: Some of the swimmers begin their Games with heats. Shane Ryan (100m backstroke), Rory McEvoy (100m backstroke), Darragh Greene (100m breastroke), Nicholas Quinn (100m breastroke), Calum Bain (50m butterfly), Conor Brines (50m butterfly),  and 4 x 100m fresstyle relay heats all take place in the 02:00 GMT pool session. While Natasha MacManus competes in the preliminary round of the female 1m Springboard competition at 03:00 GMT. Later in the morning the Women’s football team face Canada in the second of the Pool B matches at 09:00 GMT.

Mon, August 21st: Jordan Sloan swims the heats in the 200m freestyle at 02:00 GMT, Jack Ffrench competes in the male 1m Springboard preliminary round at 03:00 GMT, and the Men’s football team face Mexico in the second Pool A match at 12:30 noon GMT.
