Maynooth University student and Waterford man Robin Dawson claimed the gold medal in the 2016 World University Golf Championships in Golf de Planchetorte in Brive, France yesterday. Robin’s first place finish helped the Ireland team to secure 2nd place overall as well with Eugene Smith (Maynooth University) finishing in 8th and Cathal Butler (Maynooth University) in a share for 13th.

Robin Dawson trailed French golfer Franck Medale by one stroke entering the final round but a brilliant round of 70 (-2) saw Dawson claim the victory on a three over par total to leave him two shots ahead of China’s Xuewem Luo. Robin’s victory emulate’s both Graeme McDowell and Danielle McVeigh who won gold at the 2000 World University Championships and the 2007 World University Games respectively.

The Irish Women’s team of Shannon Burke (Maynooth University), Sinéad Sexton (University of Stirling) and Rachel Taylor (Trinity College Dublin) were placed 8th overall.
