Dublin City University collected their first ever Student Sport Ireland / Irish Rugby Football Union Women’s Rugby Division 1 title recently after a flawless five wins from five games saw then crowned champions.

The foundation for their maiden success in Division 1 was laid in early October when DCU cruised to a 72-5 victory over University College Cork, before coming up against current champions University of Limerick. On home soil DCU came out on top by 29-10 and sat joint top of the table with UCD after two rounds.

Round 3 pitted the two Dublin sides against each other in Belfield and after a fantastic game of rugby it was DCU who won out on a 37-22 score line. Another success on the road this time defeating NUI Galway by 36-0 saw DCU sit on twenty points with one round to play.

As UCD had finished their five games a week earlier DCU knew that they had to earn at least a bonus point to secure the league title. On a windy night in Suttonians DCU put IT Carlow to the sword in the style of champions running in 7 tries on route to a 41-0 win.

DCU will go into the new Women’s Rugby Tier 1 Cup competition after Christmas as hot favourites to lift the title with UCD and University of Limerick among two of the strongest teams in the chasing pack. The launch and draw for the cup competition will take place in the Aviva Stadium on January 18th.
