IT Carlow captured their first ever Student Sport Ireland Pool league title with a commanding 11-3 win over Dundalk IT in the final on Tuesday afternoon last in D15 Pool Academy in Mulhuddart.
IT Carlow had qualified for the final after a dramatic tie break win over Athlone IT in the semi-final with the sides finishing at ten frames each after the four sessions and IT Carlow would capture glory with a 2-1 win in the tie break.
Dundalk IT’s route to the final was even more dramatic as their five players of Adam Logue, Paul Adeniyi, Bradley Duffy, Keith O’Brien and Andrew Ward had to come through a tie break in the quarter final to see off a determined National College of Ireland team, before being pushed all the way to the final frame by Trinity College Dublin in the semi-final with Bradley Duffy winning the crucial frame in the last four contest.
The final got off to a dream start for IT Carlow as all five of Wayne Brennan, Martin Dunne, Morgan Thomas, Mark White and Michael Chambers won their frames in the opening session for a 5-0 lead. IT Carlow pushed 8-0 in front before Dundalk IT eventually got off the mark with wins by Bradley Duffy and Paul Adeniyi in the second session as the score now stood at 8-2.
IT Carlow quenched any hope of a late surge from Dundalk IT as three frames in the third session won by Mark White, Morgan Thomas and Martin Dunne sealed a famous first for IT Carlow.
