Dundalk IT smash their way to SSI Badminton glory

Student Sport Ireland Badminton Finals

Last Wednesday Baldoyle Badminton Centre hosted the finals of the 2015-16 Student Sport Ireland badminton leagues and it was Dundalk IT who secured victory as they defeated IT Tralee in a brilliant final that went all the way to the final set of the mixed doubles contest.

The action got underway at 10am with the quarter-finals being played on the eight courts in the fantastic venue on Dublin’s north side. Last year’s winners WIT were knocked out at this stage as they were defeated 3-2 by IT Blanchardstown who had a very strong team. Letterkenny IT joined them in the semi-finals after defeating IT Tallaght ‘A’ 4-1 and a bad day all round for IT Tallaght was compounded when their ‘B’ team lost 5-0 to Dundalk IT. The last quarter final saw IT Tralee advance after a fine 3-1 victory over Dublin Business School.

Dundalk IT and IT Blanchardstown played out a very entertaining semi-final with the game deadlocked at two sets each before Dundalk IT sealed victory by taking the mixed doubles match. IT Tralee continued to progress and they were 3-1 winners over Letterkenny IT in the second semi-final.

The final got underway at 3pm with official umpires provided by Badminton Ireland in the chair it was a fantastic occasion as two courts were in use for the final. In the men’s singles game the highly talented Wee Lun Fu was a 21-11, 21-4 winner over David Graham as Dundalk IT drew first blood. However IT Tralee hit back in emphatic fashion as Grace Stack was a comfortable 21-2, 21-3 winner over Olivia Chan. Next up was the men’s and women’s doubles and again the spoils would be shared with Dundalk IT continuing their dominance in the men’s with their doubles pair of Hou Ern Thin and Douglas Ersoon Zhi winning 21-13, 21-12 against David Graham and Barry O’Connor. If the Dundalk IT men were impressive then IT Tralee women were equally dominant as Grace Stack and Darina Stack blitzed Aidren Whelan and Anna Nowacka 21-9, 21-7 to tie the match at 2-2.

The mixed doubles would decide the match and a brilliant game saw Wee Lun Fu and Anna Nowacka take the opening set 21-17. IT Tralee were not done yet and their duo of Darina Stack and Barry O’Connor played some brilliant badminton to take the second set 21-12. It would all come down to the final set of the final and Wee and Anna would get the balance right with some terrific smashes from Wee and Anna hit some brilliant shots at the net as Dundalk IT were crowned champions 21-11 in the third and deciding set.
