Mary Immaculate Limerick crowned All-Ireland Fresher Champions
Mary Immaculate College Limerick were crowned All-Ireland Fresher Camogie Champions last week after they defeated Limerick City rivals University of Limerick by a single goal in the final played in Dublin City University’s GAA grounds.

The competition which is run over a one day blitz format of seven-a-side teams began in the DCU GAA grounds at 10am and University of Limerick would ironically defeat Mary I in the opening game on a 16-11 score line. UL continued their winning start to the competition by defeating Trinity College Dublin on a 13-0 score line, meanwhile Mary I got up and running with a win over Maynooth.

In the final round of the group stages both UL and Mary I defeated Trinity College and Maynooth University respectively to reach their All-Ireland semi-finals.

It was an all Munster affair for the All-Ireland semi-finals as Cork IT faced unbeaten UL and Mary I took on 2015 Ashbourne Champions Waterford IT. Mary I managed to book their final spot and a rematch against UL after they defeated WIT, UL continued their winning streak after defeating CIT to create an all Limerick final in DCU.

In an exciting final, MIC dominated the first half finding the net six times in the eight minutes. Unbeaten UL found the net twice but were keen to right this wrong in the second half.

In the second half, the talented teams hit 13 goals between them with UL making a strong come back to make it just a single goal dividing the sides. Mary I held on to their one goal victory until the final whistle, as they atoned for defeat in last year’s final against WIT to be crowned 2015 All-Ireland Fresher Champions.

To add to the success of Mary I’s blitz campaign, Galway native Ciara Burke was also presented with Fresher Blitz player of the Tournament by CCAO chairperson Stephen Hoary.
