A solid start for the men’s and women’s football teams this morning (Thursday, 2nd July) in extremely warm and humid conditions in Gwangju with both teams drawing their first game of the competition.

The women’s team took a first half lead through a brilliant Claire O’Riordan (IT Carlow) goal after great work by Siobhan Killeen (UCD) down the right. (Check out the goal here SSI World University Games 2015 Facebook page). Their Chinese Taipei opponents then equalised in the lead up to half-time and that is how the score remained through to full-time.

The men’s side played out a tough and physical 0-0 all draw with Uruguay with both teams anxious not to give up any chances.

Next up for the women’s team is the Czech Republic on Saturday afternoon while the men’s team take on China on Sunday afternoon.

Tomorrow we look forward to the spectacular opening ceremony before an action packed weekend of high performance student sport.
