John Kelly from St. Johnstone , Co. Donegal recently won both the Indoor and Outdoor Irish Universities Athletics Association events this year in the Shot Putt.  At present, John is a first year student at Letterkenny Institute of Technology studying Computer Science and boasts a season’s best of 15.97 metres in the 7.26kg shot. He recently spent 2 weeks warm weather training in Gran Canaria with the Icelandic Coach Peter Gudmunsson, a former Olympian in the event having been to Soeul in 1988 and Atlanta 1996.

John speaks well of the experience of working with Gudmunsson having clearly recognised the gains that he has made in strength & endurance and also flexibility training since his schedule was revised.  John also avails of a training facility at home in Donegal which his father prepared for him through renovating a farm building on the family farm. In addition to the weekly strength & conditioning schedule John also works out under the supervision of William Moore a coach based in UUJ, with regular trips to Moore’s Jordanstown base.

John’s target for the year is simply European Championship qualification and his goal to be in Eskilstuna, Sweden and feels that he can make the distance required; as it stands he is just 5 centimetres from his target.
