The TriLaois Triathlon took place Saturday morning in near perfect conditions and with a large field of competitors. Organised by Trilogy Triathlon Club the race also hosted the 2015 Intervarsity Championships meaning there was particularly strong line-up.

In the men’s intervarsity race, UCC student Chris Mintern took the early lead, pushing hard during the 750m swim in a bid to retain his title for a third successive year. His efforts came unstuck as he ran into some problems which saw him loose time during the 20km bike leg.

Westport native and UCD man Con Doherty, a member of the Triathlon Ireland Elite Squad along with Mintern, emerged from the 750m swim in second, had a quick transition one and went on to post an impressive 29:53 split on the bike and finish off with a 16:01 5km run to win in a lightening quick time of 57:20. Niall McCarra (NUI Galway) finished 2nd in a time of 1:03:26 as he just held off the challenge of Conor Verbruggen (DIT) who was closing in on the run, finishing in 1:03:55.

The women’s Intervarsity race was won by Hilary Hughes (UCD) who had some work to do coming out of the water but biked and ran well to cross the line in 1:18:48. Niamh Curran (UCD) finished less than a minute behind in second in a time of 1:19:44 with Sally McHugh (UCD) rounding out the podium positions. A clean sweep for the University College Dublin team-mates.
