DIT Launch Elite Sport Academic Mentoring Programme

December 2, 2014  |  News  |  Share

The appointment of specific academic mentors across 15 DIT Schools to ‘champion’ their elite student-athletes to meet their academic requirements while competing at the highest levels in Irish Sport is seen as a valuable addition to the activities of the Elite Athlete Support Programme.  DIT’s unique Athlete Support Programme provides participants with a wide range of professional and personal supports to help them progress throughout their sporting and academic careers.

The academic mentors who DIT are delighted to have on board will work closely with the Sport and Recreation Service to help create an environment where the high performance athletes can combine their sporting career with their education in a way that allows them to achieve their potential in both fields.

They will support the student-athletes studying a range of academic disciplines to negotiate necessary flexible learning agreements to meet academic requirements where sporting commitments may prevent the student-athlete from attending tutorial/lecture/ practical times. This typically may involve some modification to the teaching or assessment programme of the student-athlete to facilitate their training and competitive needs.
