IUAA Athletes of the Year Announced

Maria O’Sullivan (Trinity College Dublin) and John Travers (Athlone IT) Named University Athletes of the Year

At the Annual Athletics Ireland Awards ceremony in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry on Wednesday 26 November, Maria O’Sullivan (TCD) and John Travers (AIT) were named Female and Male University Athletes of the Year. These awards were based solely on their performances in IUAA University Championships. Both have had further success nationally and internationally during the past academic year.

Maria O’Sullivan, who completed her B.A. degree in Molecular Medicine in June, held a Trinity Sports Scholarship in 2013-14. Maria won the IUAA Cross-Country Championship at Cork IT in March, leading the Trinity Women home to retention of the Team Championship. She won the 3000m and 5000m at the IUAA Outdoors Track and Field Championships in Waterford in April and took the Silver medal in the 3,000m at the Indoors Championships, each in record times for a TCD athlete. At the Road Relay Championships at Maynooth University in November 2013, she clocked the 2nd fastest 2-mile leg of 44 competitors. At the Irish Universities v Scottish Universities v Scottish Athletics Select match at Grangemouth, Scotland in June, she won the 3000m, contributing to the Irish Universities win in the Women’s match and the Overall competition. She was TCD/ATAK Sports Star of the Month in February.

John Travers, who was conferred with his degree in Sports Management in October, held a Sports Scholarship at Athlone IT. He won the 1500m at the IUAA Indoors Championships at the Athlone Arena in 3:42.66, cutting 1.6 sec off his own Intervarsity indoors record. He clocked the 2nd fastest 3-mile leg of 30 competitors at the Road Relays, contributing significantly to the Team Silver medals for AIT. John took the Bronze medal at the IUAA Cross-country championships in Cork in a highly competitive race, leading home AIT to the Team Bronze medals. At the Outdoors Track and Field Championships in Waterford he won the 5000m in convincing style. He was named AIT/ATAK Sport Star of the Month in November 2013.
