Student Sport Ireland is pleased to announce GMIT Castlebar Surf Club and organisers of the 2014 Surf Intervarsity held at Keel beach in Achill Co Mayo on the 22 – 23 March as winners of the 2013/2014 Event of the Year Competition.

The annual award sets out to identify and recognise excellence in the organisation and delivery of intercollegiate events by third level sports clubs.

In presenting the award Student Sport Ireland Hon. Secretary Elizabeth McLaughlin congratulated the organising committee for not only undertaking what was regarded as one of the best competitive surfing events held in the country in recent years but its achievement in overcoming critical challenges to deliver a first rate event while also generating much needed business for the local community in Achill.

Chief amongst these challenges were the fact that not only was the event course destroyed by storms six weeks before the intervarsity but weather conditions on the day were harsh with large swells, strong winds and wintry showers on the first day of competition. To overcome these significant challenges the committee mobilised the local community including the county council to relocate and redesign a new course while twenty six volunteers, supported for the first time at such an event by jet skis, oversaw the running of the competition in the difficult conditions. In return the 182 competitors from 15 colleges and their supporters that attended the event generated much welcomed income for the small local community over the weekend of the competition.

Nigel Jennings, GMIT Sports Officer, Mayo campus, says: “It was an extraordinary event and a brilliant weekend where the Surf club represented GMIT Mayo proudly. The event ran impeccably and so did all the competitors. I’m extremely proud of the students who organised the event and what they achieved. Being recognised at a national level as winner of the Student Sport Ireland Event of the Year is extremely gratifying and an appropriate reward for not only the hard work put in by the students who organised the event but also of the support of the GMIT Mayo Surf Club members, all the participants, volunteers and the local community who all played their part”.

The members of the organising committee were: Jarlath Mc Hale (Chairperson), Chris Delemere, Eilis Teegan, Jason Phelan, Peter O’ Riordan and Alan O’ Connaire with support from GMIT Mayo Sports Officer Nigel Jennings.
