SASSI Student Survey Underway.

The Student Activity and Sport Study Ireland survey commissioned by SSI is taking place from October 20th to November 14th in third-level colleges, large and small across the island of Ireland

The aim of this research is to investigate and assess the participation of students in sport and physical activity in Ireland (North and South) and the factors and issues associated with their participation or non-participation. The very ambitious target is to survey over 11,000 students during the four-week period. The survey is being administrated by members of staff (‘Champions’) in each institution.

Some highlights of the survey to date include:

  • More than 2000 completed questionnaires have been lodged with the research team.
  • A total of 34 institutions (Universities, Institutes, Colleges of Education, Further-Education Colleges and Private Colleges) are involved.
  • Formal approval (Ethical Approval) has been agreed by the vast majority of these and approval is expected from the remainder this week
  • A number of colleges have already met the survey target number of students assigned to them by the researchers, some have even exceeded their quota!
  • Some of the larger colleges who have very high numbers of students involved have made great progress. This is despite the fact that the workload on champions in these colleges is very significant.

Champions who are having difficulties with any issues related to the research are encouraged to liaise immediately with the Research Officer Neal Byrne. Neal can provide significant support, including sending ‘hand-on’ support in survey planning and administration if necessary.
